Class

Structure, respect and discipline are part of every class. Students are expected to bow when entering the dojang. Students are to have a properly fitting clean uniform in good condition.

Before stepping onto the mats bow to the front of the class. When class begins students line up in belt order with highest ranking belt first on the right. Each row starts the same way. Stand at ease with hands behind your back. The instructor will then bow in the class.

A short period of meditation will begin the class. Students sit cross-legged or kneel. Arms are relaxed and placed on the knees, eyes are closed. The instructor will indicate when time is up.

Next is a warm up. The type of warm up depends on the age group but normally students begin by running in a large circle and may call off numbers, etc. Different exercises are done and may include pushups, sit ups, relays. This lasts around 8-10 minutes.

Following warm up there is stretching. This is essential as we need to stretch our muscles to prevent injuries. This is equally important for children. A head to toe stretch is done in a fun manner. As part of self development students will be expected to call a stretch session at times. More senior belt students will be expected to increase their leadership role by helping the instructor or other students.

The core of the class is spent on techniques such as forms, kicks, blocks, punches, step-sparring, self-defence and conditioning.

Near the end of class there is a cool down. This may be stretching, forms, breathing exercises, etc.

The end is marked by the instructor calling the class to line up (same order as the begining of class). Students turn to face the back and fix their uniforms so they are tidy, then they face the front. The instructor calls attention and students bow to the flags, to the instructor, and then to any black belts. As they leave the mats students must bow again to the flags.

Bowing is a sign of respect not subservience.
